grass-fed meat / wild-caught seafood sources (hong kong only)
Note: I do not receive any commission from these companies. I found these companies when searching online for grass-fed meats.
It is very hard to find grass-fed meat in Hong Kong that is affordable. The companies listed below provide free home delivery (in urban areas, remote areas may require extra delivery fees) if order amount exceeds a certain price.
Not all meat vendors will specify whether the meat is grain-fed, corn-fed, grass-fed then grain-finished, 100% grass-fed. If uncertain, call or email them to ask. They will usually be honest with you because Hong Kong people are not familiar with grass-fed benefits yet, so vendors have no interest in lying to you (e.g. some vendors emailed me back recommending grain-fed cuts for tenderness and more fat). I do try to phrase my questions so it does not seem too obvious that I'm looking for grass-fed.
Favorite supplier
Cheapest meat wholesalers
Name: Food Shop (currently the cheapest I've found [Nov 11, 2016])
Tel #: 2425-6900
Mobile #: 9135-9388 (Use Whatsapp to order for convenience)
Fax #: 2491-6834
Email: [email protected] (but I suggest you not to use email and call them instead, they never replied my emails...)
- Minimum order of $600 for free delivery
Suggestions:
- WhatsApp and kindly ask them to email or fax you their product catalog.
- They are very old-school - no website, no online shopping cart. I guess they have enough business already so they don't bother with this. Their prices for chilled products are pretty unbeatable.
- Tell them you want 100% grass-fed beef
- They sell different brands of beef/lamb and change all the time, make sure you emphasize that you want 100% grass-fed
What's so good about this wholesaler?
- ONLY wholesaler I found that has "Chilled" (not frozen) beef and lamb available (grass-fed from New Zealand)
- Free home delivery in city areas for orders over $600
- Willing to cut and sell small portions of meats to you (for certain products)
- They have unbeatable low prices (they have no website to maintain)
What I order from them:
- Chilled beef products: chilled organ meats (liver, kidney, heart), striploin (ask for more fatty cuts for more good animal fats), rib eye cuts
- Chilled lamb products: chilled standard cut lamb rack (ask for most fatty for more good animal fats)
I stopped ordering mussels and clams since 2012 after finding out all frozen mussels and clams have been previously cooked!
- "Talley's" brand of New Zealand mussels - much better tasting than "SeaLord" brand, no bitterness
- Clam meat from Philippines
- Feel free to try other products, just make sure it's wild-caught and antibiotic-free, chemical-free, preservative-free etc.
Other suppliers
These are suppliers I've used in the past. This list may contain outdated info (Last update: September 2012)
Leo's Fine Food
http://www.leosfinefood.com.hk/
- does not specifically state grass-fed or grain-fed on website (their loss...not sure why they don't!), but they specify brand names, e.g. "Silver Fern Farms", and "Silver Fern Farms" website has certification for pure 100% New Zealand grass-fed meat. "Silver Fern Farms" is also the same brand Tenderloin Fine Foods has for its grass-fed meat sources.
Has beef, lamb, even game meats (e.g. deer, aka venison - definitely going to try this new kind of meat soon!)
- I try to buy "Chilled" products when possible instead of frozen. Reasons: 1) richer flavor and taste. 2) supposedly richer flavor is due to more nutrition - frozen meat is "damaged" in some way and has less nutrients
Products I buy from them:
Wild-caught salmon sockeye fillet
Grass-fed Australian Lamb meat (all cuts)
Grass-fed New Zealand "Silver Fern Farms" beef (ribeye - best flavor for value; frozen bone marrow)
Name: Million Far East Gourmet (now has new online shopping system
http://www.millionfareast.com/main/home/index.html#/en
One of Hong Kong's largest food/meat/seafood importers - the reason why they have unbeatable prices!
- Contact and order through telephone
- Minimum order of $400 HKD for free delivery
What I order from them:
- Grass-fed lamb and beef products (from New Zealand - "Silver Fern Farms" brand officially states its 100% grass-fed feeding system)
Oriole Food Company (cheapest oyster, mussels, whelk supplier as of August 16, 2012)
http://www.oriolefood.com.hk/eshop/
Products I buy from them:
All types of oysters
Frozen NZ mussels
Frozen whelks
Tenderloin Fine Foods
(cheap, but not the cheapest [July 10, 2012], but no organic grass-fed organ meats)
www.tenderloin.com.hk
What I buy from them:
New Zealand grass-fed beef (cheapest muscle meat cuts, bone marrow)
Organic chicken (stopped buying organic chicken altogether due to unnatural feed; real free-range chickens should eat bugs as well as seeds/grains; 99% of organic chicken are 100% grain fed instead, distorting their nutritional profiles)
Pasture-fed lamb (lamb chop, tenderloin)
Occasionally some wild-caught salmon fillets (even wild-caught seafood nowadays are contaminated with all sorts of pollutants/chemicals due to ocean pollution, very sad) <-- this is a debatable issue on RPDforum.com, search for "mercury fish"
Meat Market
(a lot more expensive than Tenderloin, especially grass-fed meats, but is the only place I could find in HK that sells grass-fed organic organ meats)
http://www.meatmarket.com.hk/
What I buy from them:
Pasture-fed lamb kidneys
Organic chicken livers ([May,2012] stopped buying all organic chicken products as they are fed an unnatural 100% grain diet, which ruins their nutritional profile; the natural chicken diet should include insects, other seeds/plants and many other foods in a wild environment)
Other stores found online (usually not the cheapest - I've done comparisons):
http://www.south-stream-seafoods.com/store/index.html
http://www.texasfood.com.hk/ (Chinese only website; with other seafoods, e.g. oysters, mussels - worth investigating) http://www.hongkongpersonalchef.com/
Other online shops/wholesalers (very cheap) with seafoods (oysters, mussels, clams...etc.) and other common meats
(most will deliver for free in city areas for over $500- around $1000)
- Usually the ones that have nicer-looking websites (retail online shops) have higher prices; more amateur-looking wholesale websites have lower prices!
- Compare prices by $/kg
